Velaterapia : Brazilian Candle Cutting

Brazilian women are known for their characteristically full and thick hair . So naturally, they have developed many smoothing and anti-frizz treatments. The rest of the world has (finally) caught on to the Brazilian blow out and (keratin) treatments, but the hottest treatment (pun intended) to come to the worlds attention at the moment is actually Velaterapia.

Velaterapia a procedure for dry and damaged hair that combats the stress caused by chemical treatments, dyeing, and constant styling. It's a process in which the hair is separated into small sections, twisted, and then put under a flame to get rid of splits ends and maximize shine.

And what makes candle cutting so much better than going under the scissors you may ask? The benefit is that all the length is preserved and only the split ends are removed. You can’t really see how much is burned off since only that what sticks out from the hair being sectioned and twisted is burned of. The burning causes the damaged parts of the hair to stick out: They are then trimmed by the flame, and the rest of the hair is given a deep, conditioning treatment afterwards. The heat of the burning opens up the hair follicle, making it more receptive to nutrients, in turn making the conditioning treatment you apply afterwards even more effective. It takes about two and a half hours and will cost you anywhere from 170 € to 230 € depending on your hair lenght.

As to the most common fear —that your beloved locks will get burned right off—  get it done by a professional and you’ll be alright. And whatever you do, do NOT take matters into your own hands, for obvious reasons.
